Mildred hadn’t expected the school to be bigger than her entire town. She didn’t know what she had expected, but she could never have even imagined this. She felt like an ant as she walked through the double door and into an opulent entry hall swarming with people. She smoothed down her robe as she took in the elaborate dress of the other students – a rather plain ant, indeed.
And this place was going to be her home for the next 3 years. She swallowed. It was going to be incredible…yes, is was going to be wonderful. She nodded, determined to be positive despite feeling, well, overwhelmed if she was honest.
Hallways branched off from the entry in all directions and a grand double staircase in front of her led to a landing where a group of adults looked down on the gathered students. The adult in the center, a man wearing a stiff robe that did not seem to move even when he shifted, unclasped his hands and spread them in a gesture to encompass the whole group.
“Welcome to Regiara, Academy of Sorcery.” He brought his hands back together, touching at just the fingertips. “I am Headmaster Basmarth, and these fine individuals surrounding me will be your Professors for the next three years. Mind their lessons, and you will find success at Regiara. My advice to you is this: forget everything you thought you knew before coming here. Regiara is the height of magical advancement; our Professors are the best witches and wizards in the world. Do not squander your opportunity for greatness.”
With those words still echoing through the great hall, Headmaster Basmarth turned and exited through a wooden door behind him, the Professors gliding after.
A rumble filled the entry hall as students began chatting excitedly. A servant stepped forward and began gathering up her bags. “You may follow me to your room, Miss Adonia.”
“Oh, thank you so much!” Mildred said.
The servant’s eyes widened, but she smiled politely. “It is my duty to serve.” Her arms already loaded up, the servant reached for the final bag.
“Oh, I can manage that one. Surely you can’t carry anything more,” Mildred laughed. The servant’s eyebrows shot up. Mildred heard snickers from the students around her.
“I couldn’t possibly allow you to…” the servant choked out, unable to even voice the unspeakable act of allowing Mildred to carry her own bag.
“I insist,” Mildred replied, scooping up the bag.
The servant stepped in front of Mildred and bowed, whispering “I appreciate the kindness, truly, but not only will you disgrace yourself by carrying this bag, but you will land me in a deal of trouble.”
“Oh…” Mildred paused. “Certainly you may carry the bag, then.” Mildred handed it to the woman, face flushed.
And thus was Mildred’s first lesson on life at Regiara, Academy of Sorcery.
