Best Fantasy Couples for Fantasy Nerds
Greetings Fantasy Nerds! This week, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we’ll discuss our favorite Fantasy couples. There are so many good ones, but these are our favorites! Warning, there may be spoilers ahead.
Ron and Hermione – Harry Potter series
Ron and Hermoine’s relationship is full of laughs, and at times they annoy each other, just like any real relationship. Theirs is both a story of friends-to-lovers and opposites attract, and we can’t help but love them. Their romance wasn’t love at first sight, but built on friendship and trust over a long journey of ups and downs. Most importantly, they are fiercely loyal and stick together through even the darkest times.
“’Hermione, you are honestly the most wonderful person I’ve ever met,’ said Ron weakly, ‘and if I’m ever rude to you again -‘
‘- I’ll know you’re back to normal,’ said Hermione.”
Feyre and Rhysand – A Court of Thorns and Roses series
What stands out to us about Feyre and Rhysand’s relationship is just how much he respects her. Making Feyre high lady was unprecedented, but he considers her his equal and worthy of the title. Their story is also a great example of how someone can leave a toxic, abusive relationship and find happiness with someone who isn’t controlling and treats them with kindness. Rhysand rescued her from Tamlin, but only when she wanted to be rescued. After the trauma she went through, he lovingly encouraged her to continue her art, go out into the world, and make a difference.
“I would have waited 500 more years for you. A thousand years. And if this was all the time we were allowed to have… the wait was worth it. I believe everything happened, exactly the way it had to… so I could find you.”
Violet and Xaden – Fourth Wing series
Violet and Xaden are the classic example of an enemies-to-lovers story. Due to their family history, they start off the story loathing each other, but it soon becomes clear there is a chemistry between them…and more to the stories of the past. While at times the couple can be a bit nauseating, which RIdoc is fond of pointing out, it’s clear they love each other fiercely. They are both extremely protective of each other, to the point where they often make questionable choices and terrible sacrifices to save each other. But if that’s not true love, what is?
“I’m grateful my life is tied to yours because it means I won’t have to face a day without you in it. My heart beats as long as yours does, and when you die, I’ll meet Malek at your side.”
Kaye and Roiben – Modern Faerie Tales
In Holly Black’s “Modern Faerie Tales,” Kaye and Roiben’s love story is a bit unconventional. While they both have their shortcomings and can be considered at times morally gray characters, they recognize the good in each other and make an incredible team. Kaye saves Roiben’s life and in return, he is bound by faerie code to return the favor, so to speak. Their love emerges from mutual understanding and acceptance of each other’s complexities; Kaye sees beyond Roiben’s stern Fae façade to the vulnerability within, while Roiben admires Kaye’s bravery and resilience.
Kaye is thrust into the realm of Fae after their first encounter and goes through a difficult time of self-discovery amidst danger at every turn. Roiben, a knight bound by duty and honor, tries to navigate his duties while also being fiercely drawn to Kaye. They are both extremely loyal and do some badass stuff together. Also, Faeries cannot lie!
“You are the only thing I have that is neither duty nor obligation, the only thing I chose for myself. The only thing I want.”
Lúthien and Beren – The Silmarillion
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion,” the tale of Beren and Lúthien is a story of love defying insurmountable odds. Beren, a mortal man, falls deeply in love with Lúthien, an elf of unparalleled beauty and grace. Their love faces opposition not only from Thingol, an elven king and father of Lúthien, who believes a mortal is unworthy of his daughter but also from the dark forces of Morgoth, one of the main antagonist of Middle Earth. To prove his worth, Beren undertakes a perilous quest to retrieve a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown, leading to trials that test their devotion.
What makes their love profound is its blend of sacrifice and resilience. Beren and Lúthien both risk their lives for each other, showcasing a love that transcends both mortal and immortal realms. In the end, Lúthien chooses to forsake her immortal life to be with Beren, and live a mortal life in Middle Earth. Their story symbolizes the eternal struggle between light and darkness, and the power of love to overcome even the most formidable barriers.
“Farewell sweet earth and northern sky,
for ever blest, since here did lie
and here with lissom limbs did run
beneath the Moon, beneath the Sun,
Lúthien Tinúviel
more fair than mortal tongue can tell.
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this-
the dusk, the dawn, the earth, the sea-
that Lúthien for a time should be.”
