Kingdom of Dragons

“Let me show you mine,” the woman holds out her arm to reveal a glistening ruby adornment that matches her shimmering gown. A tiny dragon’s head rests atop her middle finger, its bright red body of scales wrapping around her wrist and up her forearm, ending in a tail tipped in gold. “It’s a Rubymawed Fireball.” 

She glances at her husband, who obligingly pulls out his pipe and holds it up for all to see. The woman moves her arm to the pipe. The miniature dragon lifts its head and lets out a small burst of flame, lighting the pipe. The crowd claps as her husband puffs on the pipe, quite satisfied. 

Another woman steps forward in a sparkling sapphire dress. Draped around her neck is a dragon with rippling scales of various shades of blue. It edges forward, slithering down her arm as she raises it. She tips her hand over to allow the creature to rest in her outstretched palm. A spout of water arcs from the dragon’s mouth, causing a hiss of steam as the embers die in the pipe. 

“I present the Sapphire Stormblast”, the woman says with a smirk.

The dutiful husband frowns.

“No matter, dear. I’ll light it again for you,” his wife says with a tight smile as she pats him on the arm.

The party’s host enters, and a hush fills the room. He wears a crown of silver covered in diamonds, polished to gleam in the chandelier light. He spins smoothly to display the wings sprouting from his back, pale blue with spines edged in diamonds. He lifts his hands in the air. “An Arctic Diamondback.”

A gasp from the crowd. 

The prince snaps his fingers, and a dozen servants appear holding bottles of champagne. The first presents his bottle to the prince. Over his shoulder, a dragon head rears up. A gust of snow blows forward, encasing the champagne bottle in frost.

The party cheers. One by one, the other servants step forward, allowing the dragon to chill their bottles before dispersing around the room to fill crystal glasses.

“A toast,” the prince raises his glass, “to Nevuria, Kingdom of Dragons.”
