Best Free Learning Tools for Writers – Part 2

Welcome, Writers! This week, we continue our post on free writing resources. There are so many out there that we had to create a part 2!

DIY MFA

DIY MFA was created with the purpose of helping those who don’t have the money or time to get a master’s degree to DIY their own creative writing program. It instructs you on the basic framework of a creative writing degree while allowing you to tailor it to your own interests. You choose the specific books you want to read or lessons you want to focus on and complete them at your own pace. We highly recommend signing up and trying it out for yourself!

Well-Storied

Well-Storied is an excellent blog with free writing advice that Clever was subscribed to for years. It really goes into the details of writing craft and story structure, as well as navigating the writer’s life. They also have a podcast if you prefer that format to get your lessons. Although Well-Storied is no longer posting new content, the posts still exist in an archive and are well worth reading!

Virtual Writing Summits

Virtual writing summits seem to be popular right now. Most of these summits are put together by groups of authors, and we bet you could easily find one that interests you. Typically, they offer the courses free if you watch live or within 24 hours, with the option to pay for lifetime access. It’s a good idea to look at the schedule in advance and prioritize the lessons you are most interested in. We’ve found that even watching a couple of courses during the free time period can be extremely helpful!

Local Library

Sometimes it’s easy to forget what a great resource the library can be for writers. You can check out books on the writing craft for free, and read other books in your genre for comp research. Not to mention, a lot of libraries have writing workshops you can join. You could even ask about starting your own writing group, if one doesn’t exist!

What Do You Think?

Which of these free resources do you plan on trying? What free tools have you found helpful for expanding your writing knowledge? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks so much for reading!
