Wish Upon a Star
The girl stared out her window, the night sky glimmered as soft rain drops padded against the glass. Her tears matched the raindrops, gently falling onto the sill. Suddenly, a bright light streaked across the sky and headed straight towards the girl. Startled, but before she could properly react, a sparkling star emerged before her. It bobbed up and down and its form was an ever-changing iridescent glow.
The star passed through the glass of the window, and the girl’s hair moved softly as if a slight breeze emerged. Her face glowed in the light of the star, and the star shifted as if taking her in. Blinking eyes appeared on the star’s surface, followed by a beaming smile.
“I found you!” The star giggled.
“Found me?” The girl felt confused but filled with warmth and happiness.
“Yes! My job is to find those pure of heart but full of sadness and longing, and grant a wish!”
The girl pondered this for a moment, she was sad. Tonight was an especially strong wave of melancholy. The star moved back-and-forth around the girl, almost dancing. Sparkles shifted and emitted from the star which lit up the girls room.
“I get a wish? Are there any rules?”
The star excitedly moved up and down, “No real rules, just nothing that would harm others, but, that’s why we look for someone pure of heart!”
The girl was deep in thought, and stared back out the window. The star just seemed happy to be there.
“Star, can I sleep on it while you stay with me?”
The star seemed surprised, but happily surprised at that. “Sure!”
The girl settled into her bed and wrapped her plush comforter around her. “Do you sleep?”
“I dim in the daylight and become sleepy in a sense, but I can watch over you!” The star zoomed around the room until finally settling on a pillow next to the girl. “I’m not too bright, am I?”
“No, you’re perfect.” For the first time in a long time, the girl easily fell asleep.
…
When the girl awoke daylight was streaming in through her window. The star was in fact much dimmer, and only slightly moved, like a slow-breathing. The girl got up and closed the curtains, and the star seemed to shuffle. “Have you decided?” the star said sluggishly, as if it was just waking up.
“I have! Star, will you stay by my side until I am no longer a part of this world?”
The star beamed at the girl and flew around her causing air to rush and the girl to glow. The star nestled into her hair and the girl felt warmth radiate all around her. “There’s no rule about that, I guess you’re stuck with me!”
With the star by her side, melancholia never visited the girl again.
