Adventurer’s Haven – Part 2
Start from the beginning here.
…
The quiet scraping of Gawain’s sword against the whetstone threatened to lull the group into a feeling of security. They chatted with a sense of familiarity that can only come after depending on one another for your lives, after fighting countless monsters side-by-side in the dark of the dungeon’s depths. It had begun to feel like together they could face any foe.
As Harrow reached for her goblet of mead, the magic swirling around her wrist turned yellow. She stood up and slung a quiver over her shoulder, bow dangling from her fingers. She watched as Gawain buckled on his sheath and Bromli strapped an axe to his back. The only sign that Clarice was readying to fight was the magic swirling faster between her fingertips.
They stood waiting: a breath, two. The magic at their wrists transformed back to purple.
Clarice gave the group a smug look. “One for my count.”
“Your way is better than the old system, I’ll give you that,” Bromli said with a chuckle.
Harrow grinned. “Anything beats sleeping on the roof with Ole Bromli here.”
“Aye, taking shifts watching for monsters all night,” he said. “Though I will say, watching your arrows soar from the roof and explode against monsters in the dark was a sight to behold.”
“You still get to see it now and again,” Harrow laughed.
Twice more the magical warning system flashed yellow, as they sat round the fire.
“The monsters are bold tonight,” said Gawain gruffly.
His conversational skills left something to be desired, but he made up for it with his swordsmanship.
“At this rate, I better go recharge the barrier to make sure it lasts through the night,” Clarice said, stretching.
“I’ll go with you and reset my traps,” Harrow replied.
“Want me to come and watch your backs while you work?” Bromli volunteered.
Harrow waved him off. “Finish your beer. We’ll likely be back by the time you do.”
