Adventurers Haven – part 4

The magic swirling around Bromli and Gawain’s wrists flashed yellow.

“Another warning,” stated Gawain. “They must be testing that the barrier is reset properly.”

Bromli grunted in affirmation as he took another swig of his beer. “Harlow said she’d be back by the time I finished my beer.” He stared into the mug and frowned. “Who will refill my glass?” He grinned at Gawain.

“Hah! Not a chance,” Gawain scoffed.

Bromli stood and lifted his mug. “You want a drink while I’m up?”

Gawain shook his head.

Bromli busied himself refilling the glass, while Gawain stared into the hearth.

Not much of a drinker or a talker, Bromli thought.

He sat back in his chair and drank his beer, tapping his knee. He wasn’t quite at ease with Gawain without one of the women present. They always knew what to say.

After a few moments of silence, he stood again. “Best go check on things,” he grumbled.

Gawain nodded without looking at him. “If you aren’t back in ten, I’ll come after you.”

Bromli opened the door to the inn and shouted. He took off running without waiting for a response from Gawain.

The women were trapped in a shield, completely surrounded by monsters. Explosions rocked the night, flames brushing the shield as monsters roared.

He whipped his axe from his back and started clearing a path. He heard Gawain right behind him, attacking the monsters his axe missed. He was faster on account of his height, and had caught up easily.

With the two of them working together, they were able to reach the shield.

“What the hell happened here?!” Bromli yelled.

Gawain just gave Clarice a nod, and she turned her magic on the two males. They emitted a brief glow, buffed for the fight ahead.

Harlow began aiming her arrows further out, as the two fighters stepped outside the safety of the shield. They fought side by side, backed up against the shield.

While Bromli caused devastation with his fierce arcing blows, Gawain’s sword swung swift and sure. They were a sight to behold. Purple magic flowed around them as Clarice continued to defend the group.

Eventually, the tide of monsters began to slow. Then, they turned and fled, screeching into the dark.

The weary group made their way back to the inn. As they dragged themselves inside, a cheer erupted around the common room. The guests had all come down after seeing the fighting.

“Apologies for disturbing your slumber,” Harlow said. “Drinks are on the house.”
