Best Mobile Apps for Fantasy Nerds

Welcome, Fantasy Nerds! This is the next installment in our series, “Best Things for Fantasy Nerds”, where we share with you all the things we think are great. Next time, WTF will cover the best video games, so be sure to check back in two weeks. For now, let’s talk about the best mobile apps for fantasy nerds!

Wizards Unite

I cannot tell you how excited I was for the release of this app! I really enjoyed Pokémon GO, and I was so pumped about a Harry Potter version. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! To me it was even better than Pokémon GO. Similar to that app, you are trying to cast spells to set free trapped magical creatures, characters, and other lost items. You go around to inns to collect spell energy, and walk to unlock portkeys. So what’s different?

Some of the magical creatures I’ve encountered

For one, I think that Wizards Unite has a good story to it and I enjoy the assignments that allow you to unravel the cause of the calamity (the reason these magical creatures and objects are spread throughout our world). I also love the fact that you can forage herbs and ingredients and use them to make potions. Also, you can go around to greenhouses and grow your own herbs.

Another really cool aspect that isn’t in the Pokémon version is the professions. You get to choose between an Auror, Magizoologist, and Professor. You earn scrolls and books throughout the game that you use to learn and improve certain abilities depending on your chosen track. It’s similar to a talent tree in World of Warcraft or other RPGs. I picked the Magizoologist because I love catching magical creatures! For those of you that play, what profession did you choose?

Castle Story

In this game you are the ruler of your own medieval kingdom that you must build and expand. This game has a great storyline and memorable characters to join your realm. You complete quests to learn each of the characters backstories and to give them what they need to feel at home in your kingdom. There is also a bit of mystery about the kingdom and your identity that you are trying to unravel.

The best part of this game is the amazing events. And the good thing is these events are doable without spending money on the game. There is always an interesting story to them, along with new decorations, characters, and adorable creatures you can add to your kingdom. You can get dragons, unicorns, fairies, mermaids, phoenixes, and basically any other mythical creature you can think of! We think this game is perfect for fantasy nerds!

Dragon City

My Dragon City

This is a game where you raise, breed, and feed dragons! But it has more to offer than your normal pet-raising game. What has really kept me hooked on this game is the events and the constant addition of awesome new dragons (many based off of pop-culture). Seriously, I don’t know how they keep coming up with the designs for these new dragons. I’m obsessed with trying to breed and collect them!

Some dragons you can only earn from special events, and I always have fun completing the events. They make it so you can earn some dragons from every event, but sometimes the rarest dragons can’t be earned without spending money. That’s the only real downside to this game, but despite that I’ve been playing since it was a Facebook game (remember those?).

Choices

Some of the stories you can play

Choices is marketed as “stories you play”, and you get to make choices to decide your fate during these role-playing games. They do have some interesting fantasy stories, The Crown and The Flame being our unanimous favorite. In this story you alternate playing between a dethroned queen and her magic-wielding friend (or more?), as they maneuver to get back her kingdom. Along the way you must make choices to win allies to your side, build the size of your army, and increase your magic and prestige.

Another good fantasy story is Elementalists, where you play as a new student at a school of magic. You can learn new spells and even get a really adorable magical pet. NightBound is a story where you are a human who can see through the “glimmers” of magical beings to see their true form. You will meet Fae and undead, and team up with a monster hunter and a werewolf to defeat whoever is trying to kill you. There are also some other stories about vampires, ghosts, and sci-fi.

The only thing I don’t like is that a lot of the choices you make require gems, which you can only get by completing chapters in stories, or buying them. It can be very frustrating to get to a choice and not have enough gems to do what you want. When that happens, you have to go complete chapters of other stories before you come back. But the stories are so good that we continue to play despite this.
