Sunbeam

I was lying on my favorite outgrown tree branch. It was a perfect cloudless day, the sun felt incredible on my body. My favorite thing to do was sunbathe, I could practically feel each distinctive sun beam, every one with a different but always delicate kiss. My second favorite thing was to eat, but they went hand in hand, silently waiting for my food as I enjoyed the warmth. Suddenly I heard the loud crunch of tires and flinched. The cars were growing ever closer as time went on, and every sound of those cars brought me back to the worst day of my life.

 My best friend and I decided to go off on a secret adventure, we were younger then and we didn’t want our parents to know. We knew the highway was off limits to cross, but we heard tales of a beautiful spring across it. It yearned to us, I quickly flicked my tongue out just imagining the taste of that fresh, crisp water. We had always made plans to go, but never followed through. We crunched leaves as we neared the opening to the highway, both shaking with a mix of fear and excitement. We knew what we were doing was wrong, and I think that was part of it.

We finally reached it, the highway. It was dark, and huge yellow lines were in the center of the dark ground.  It was painfully hot to the touch, like it absorbed all my precious sunbeams and used them against me. I began to regret this decision, I hesitantly turned to my friend but he was beaming as he took the first step across. He looked around a few times, snapping his head back and forth. I wanted to tell him to stop, but I didn’t want him to know I was terrified. He started taking steps faster and faster, clearly gaining more courage with each one. I heard something in the distance, a low rumble at first but it quickly grew louder and louder. I saw his head turn in fear, but it was too late. The car was far too fast for him to make it back, impossibly fast.

In a flash I saw my friend’s body obliterated by the tire, his head grew disgustingly large, eyes bulging, before it exploded under the pressure. I know it happened in a millisecond, but it was as if I was watching in slow motion. Long after the car was gone I still couldn’t look away from his squashed body, brain matter and blood splatter everywhere. The back half of his body twitched for what seemed like an eternity until he died. A sudden buzzing interrupted my dark recollection. I smiled and thought to myself;

Finally, dinner.”
