Best Quotes for Book Nerds

Welcome, Fantasy Nerds! We’ve done a post in the past on our favorite writing quotes, so this week we thought it would be fun to share our favorite bookish quotes. We hope these inspire all our fellow book nerds!

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.”

-George R.R. Martin

This is one of my favorite quotes about reading, because I think it perfectly describes the experience of a good book. It is like we live a life inside the story. We feel what the characters feel and learn from their experiences. It makes me pity those who do not read because they do not get to experience all those lives inside the pages.

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

-Stephen King

As a Fantasy Nerd, I especially love this quote because of the idea that books are magic. They often feel like a portal to another world. I think that it is a form of magic that stories can transport us in that way and allow us to share ideas and worlds with others.

“When in doubt, go to the library.”

-J.K. Rowling

I had to include a quote from my favorite book nerd, Hermione Granger, on this list. I like that this quote reminds us that we can find answers in a book. I don’t think it just means factual answers either; there are many times in my life that a book has felt like the answer to what I was going through in that moment. Often, we can find strength and healing in a story.

“I can survive well enough on my own – if given the proper reading material.”

-Sarah J. Maas

I love this quote from the kick-ass heroine in Throne of Glass. I think all book nerds can relate to this. It is a reminder that we are strong and can overcome whatever we face, as long as we have our trusty books!

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.

-Jane Austen

I just love this quote, because I feel it in my heart. The witty Jane Austen always makes me chuckle with this one. I feel like I never tire of books, and without my collection I would be quite miserable.

Once you learn to read, you will be forever free

-Frederick Douglas

This is one of my favorite quotes of all time, in fact I have it on a plaque I got from the Library of Congress! The freedom he speaks of is profound. Escaping into a book is like leaving this reality for another world, and it’s a world of your choosing.

It is my belief that books are living things…. And as living things, they need to be protected. Instead of being afraid, I could become something to fear.”

-Holly Black

This is an amazing quote for both reading and writing! Reading about your favorite characters is in a sense becoming them as their story unfolds. When I was younger, especially while in school, I would carry my books with me cradled in my arms, like they were something that needed to be protected. In writing, you decide how this character develops, and you have all the power! You can make them someone to be feared.

What Do You Think?

Which of these quotes was your favorite? Do you have a favorite bookish quote that we didn’t include on this list? Let us know in the comments!
