New and Upcoming Shows and Movies for Fantasy Nerds

Welcome, Fantasy Nerds! We are always looking for more fantasy shows to watch, so we’ve decided to start a new series. We will be posting regularly about new and upcoming shows and movies for fantasy nerds. We hope this will keep you updated on what’s coming out and give you some new things to watch. Here are the new fantasy shows we are enjoying and the ones we are looking forward to in the Spring/Summer of 2024.

Current Anime Shows

We’ll start off this list with the shows that are currently airing, which happen to be all anime, as the winter season has just kicked off. If you aren’t interested in anime you can skip ahead to the upcoming shows, but we think you should give some of these a shot!

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – While this anime started in September, it is continuing with new episodes during the winter season. Frieren quickly became Clever’s new favorite show, and she is not alone in that view. Frieren managed to rise to the spot of top-rated anime, surpassing some that have been at the top for years. Frieren has a fresh take on the adventure anime genre, with the story starting up after the defeat of the Demon King, and following the elf Frieren after her fellow party members are dead or too old to journey with her. It has an emotional depth seen in few fantasy series and manages to connect past memories with current battles. We highly recommend you check out this anime.
  • The Witch and the Beast – If you are into dark action-packed anime with a bit of mystery, this is one you should consider. It follows two members of an order that seems to be founded to solve any magic-related problems, including hunting witches. One of the pair, Guideau, who was cursed by a witch herself, is on a quest to break the curse and get revenge on any witch she can find. There were hints of world-building and deeper mysteries throughout the show. At the time of this post, only two episodes are released, but we have been intrigued so far and are looking forward to more.
  • Delicious in Dungeon – If you are looking for a fantasy anime that is funny and light-hearted, this is one we would recommend. The premise is that a party of adventurers needs to quickly get back into the depths of a dungeon to save their friend, and they don’t have the time or money to buy food for the journey. They resolve themselves to eating some of the monsters they kill. This turns out to be mostly delicious, since they happen to meet a fellow adventurer who has been researching and perfecting monster recipes on his own. The episodes show how they defeat the edible monsters they encounter, as well as the recipes they create. I found myself amused and entertained by the party-members and their antics. The first few episodes are currently available on Netflix.
  • Fluffy Paradise – This is another light-hearted anime, but with lots of magical creatures and cuteness. It would be a great one to watch with kids. It starts off with a woman dying from overwork, and when she gets reincarnated her only wish is to spend her new life petting all the fluffy creatures. I can totally relate! So she is born into her new life as Neema, the girl of a noble who has the power to befriend all non-human creatures. When she attracts notice for taming some powerful creatures, some politics and maneuvering ensues, but mostly I found myself laughing at the carefree attitude of Neema in the face of dangerous creatures, as well as the reactions of those around her to her lack of fear. This anime may not be for everyone, but if you are a fan of cute magical creatures you should check out the first two episodes out now.
  • Solo Leveling – Now we’ll return to a dark and violent new anime. This isn’t one we’ve seen, but Clever’s husband has and assured us it should be on this list. It’s a modern fantasy that starts as an underdog story but turns into a power anime. The main character was the weakest hunter, but after being defeated in a dungeon he gains the ability to level up – which no one else has. This is definitely an anime worth checking out if you like action-packed shows.
  • Mashle: Magic and Muscles – Season 2 of Mashle just started this month, and it’s one we look forward to checking out. We’ve heard it compared to Harry Potter mixed with One-Punch Man. It seems like a funny and interesting fantasy anime.
  • Moonlit Fantasy – This is another isekai fantasy anime that’s on our list to watch. It is a pretty popular one, and the long-awaited season 2 just began airing.

Upcoming Shows

Next, we’ll cover some fantasy shows coming up in the Spring and Summer of 2024 that we are looking forward to watching.

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender – If you’re an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan, I think you know how the last live action attempt at this went, which was horrible. Still reeling from that I am wary how this will go, but that being said, this is a series so there as a lot more time to properly cover the incredible story! I have hope, and will be going into this with an open mind (as much as I can). I adore the original cartoon, it’s one of my faovirte shows of all time, my dog is even named Appa! I am excited, and understandably cautious with this release, but will be tuning in! If you have not watched the original cartoon, I urge you to do so. Watching it made me a better human being. Feb 22 on Netflix.
  • 3 Body Problem – I’ve read 3 Body Problem, and recently finished the sequel the Dark Forest, and I am starting on Death’s End next, which is the final book in this trilogy. I LOVEthese books, they’re incredibly well written and the story is mezmerizing. I am extremely excited for this Netflix special to release, and while I know it won’t be as good as the books, seeing this on screen come to life I think will be an incredible experience. This is definitely Science Fiction, but the detailing of events is immaculate and only something very well filmed would be able to capture how incredible this story is. Again, it may be impossible to capture in a show just how flawlessly these books are written, but none-the-less this is a very exciting release I cannot wait to watch! Coming March 21 on Netflix.
  • Dead Boy Detectives – While season 2 of Sandman has no confirmed release date, this spin-off will premiere on Netflix in April 2024. The title is pretty self-explanatory. It’s a detective show set in the same universe as Sandman where the detectives are ghosts investigating supernatural crimes.
  • House of the Dragon – The first season of this Game of Thrones spin-off lived up to the hype, and we can’t wait for season 2. It’s set to release this summer on HBO, with Matt Smith unofficially confirming an August premiere.
  • My Hero Academia – This anime is our brother’s favorite, so we had to include it on this list. It’s definitely on our watch list, although we have some catching up to do! Season 7 airs in April 2024.
  • KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! – This amusing fantasy show got renewed for season 3, set to air in April 2024. Clever enjoys the antics and adventures in this isekai anime full of unlikely heroes.

Upcoming Movies

Lastly, we have a list of some fantasy movies that we are eagerly awaiting. These will be coming out in the next few months.

  • Abigail – This is a horror movie that looks to have a bit of comedy. When criminals kidnap a little girl, she turns the tables on them. She is actually a vampire, and they are now trapped in a mansion with her. Abigail comes out on April 19th.
  • If – A family comedy featuring Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski. A man tries to save a world where imaginary friends exist. Premieres May 17th.
  • The Watchers – This is a horror fantasy movie where a group of strangers are trapped in a bunker in Ireland. At night they are stalked by supernatural creatures. Premieres June 7th.
